Southern Appalachian Studies Series: Dwight McCarter & Meigs Line at Blount County Public Library

Date: February 27, 2017 Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Event Description
Following clues blazed by axes two hundred years ago, Dwight McCarter retraced the steps of the early surveyors who journeyed through mountain wilderness to demarcate the boundary between Cherokee territory and the young United States. Known as the Meigs Line, this border had crucial implications for the citizens of both nations and their peaceful coexistence. Dwight McCarter, author and retired Park Ranger of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, has explored thousands of miles of backcountry and is nationally recognized for his involvement in numerous searches and rescues and plane crashes. He has been involved in the writing of two books: “Mayday! Mayday! Aircraft Crashes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 1920 – 2000.” And with Joe Kelley, he wrote the creative nonfiction work “Meigs Line: Rangers Rediscover a Two-Century-Old Disputed Boundary Between the U.S. and Cherokee Nation.” This event will be in the Main Gallery of the library.
